Which Credit Card Issuers Accept an ITIN in 2026?

If you're new to the US, you may not have a Social Security Number yet. An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, issued by the IRS) works as an alternative at some issuers — but policies change often and no one publishes them in one place. So we maintain this table and re-verify it every month.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a credit card with an ITIN and no SSN?

Yes. Our 2026 verification confirms several major issuers accept an ITIN in place of an SSN: Capital One (all cards), Citi (all cards), Bank of America, American Express (Global Card Transfer), Petal 2 (via WebBank), and OpenSky Secured (via Capital Bank N.A.). Verification date: 2026-09-26.

Which banks accept ITIN applications, and do I need to visit a branch?

Capital One accepts an ITIN for all cards with no branch visit required — you can apply online, by phone, or in person. Bank of America requires a branch application when using an ITIN (a passport works instead of any TIN at the branch). Citi accepts an SSN, ITIN, or passport at a branch. U.S. Bank limits ITIN acceptance to select secured cards, and Wells Fargo's ITIN acceptance is conditional with conflicting sources.

Can I get a credit card with neither an SSN nor an ITIN?

Rarely. In our verified data, Firstcard is the one conditional path: without an SSN you can apply with a passport plus a U.S. visa, or an ITIN plus proof of a U.S. address — it is not document-free. The Deserve EDU card historically needed only a passport and a U.S. bank account with no SSN or ITIN, but new applications have been paused since 2026.

Does Discover accept an ITIN?

No. Discover does not accept an ITIN at all — an SSN is required. Its secured card also stopped new applications in June 2026, following the Capital One acquisition.

Does Chime accept an ITIN?

Unverified. Sources conflict: a 2026 guide states Chime requires an SSN for federal banking compliance, while weaker sites claim "SSN or TIN" acceptance. We found no official ITIN confirmation from Chime, so we do not list it as ITIN-friendly. Verification date: 2026-09-26.

Does having an ITIN guarantee credit card approval?

No. An ITIN only satisfies the tax-ID field on the application; underwriting still applies. Petal 2, for example, also requires legal U.S. residency, income, age 18+, and a physical U.S. address. OpenSky Secured requires a valid SSN or ITIN plus U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.

Applying? An ITIN gets you in the door, but approval still depends on income, banking history, and the card's underwriting. Start with our newcomer card reviews to pick the right first card.
